Types Of Granite
Composition and Formation
Granite is composed mainly of:
Quartz (20–60%) – gives hardness and glassy appearance
Feldspar (40–80%) – gives color (white, pink, or red tones)
Mica (biotite or muscovite) – adds shimmer and darker flakes
Amphiboles (hornblende, etc.) – add darker hues and texture
Formation:
Granite forms deep within the Earth when molten rock (magma) slowly cools, allowing large crystals to develop — this gives it its characteristic coarse-grained texture.
Texture :
Coarse-grained crystalline structure
Hardness :
6–7 on the Mohs scale
Density :
2.63–2.75 g/cm³
Porosity :
Very low – resistant to water absorption
Durability :
Extremely long-lasting; resists weathering
Polishability
Can take a high polish for decorative finishes
